NUTRITION

Macronutrients is a word you may have heard. What does it mean and why does it matter? The human body is designed to need 3 macros. Each one has a job to do and is needed for the body to function optimally. In fact, eating all 3 together balances your hormones to keep blood sugar in check, stabilizing mood and energy.

1. Protein

Protein is the most under consumed macronutrient by women. It is essential for building muscle, helping our body's cells recover, feeling full for longer and supporting our immune system to stay strong . It is commonly found in animal products, though is also present in other sources, such as nuts and legumes.  

2. Healthy Fats

Fat is also essential for the body but has been given a bad rap for a long time. This has led us to question how much we need and from what sources we should consume it. 

Healthy fats = nutrient dense fats eg. nuts, seeds, fish and avocado.

Your body needs fat for energy and cell growth. They also help you to absorb certain vitamins and to produce important hormones.

3. Carbohydrates (Fiber)

It's all about the source when it comes to eating this macronutrient. Carbohydrates is the body's main and referred source of energy. 


To view carbohydrates as a macronutrient that is essential for our bodies instead of a villain that packs on the pounds, we can to use the word "fiber" instead. Ultimately, it is fibrous carbs that we want to consume; complex carbohydrates rather than simple carbs, ones that take longer to digest, provide us with more nutrients and keep us fuller longer. Fiber is important for healthy digestion AND creates satiety. Choosing the right carbs to fuel us in the best way is what we strive for when it comes to our health and fitness

You may often hear from your child, "I don't like (insert fruit or vegetable here), I'm not going to eat that.", believe me, I hear it too! 


Try this -> as you build the smoothie TOGETHER for the first time and before tasting it learn the "body benefits" of each ingredient with them. Because when we know how a food positively affects our body we are making an informed decision to try it. Kids feel empowered with this information and WANT to help their body grow strong and healthy. And if they don't like it, that's OK. We make some ingredient adjustments and try again next time.


What do I mean by body benefits? 

  • Spinach, kale (and all leafy greens) have vitamin K which helps our bones, blood and brain.
  • Bananas are a "mood food" and help create good feelings which is why they're shaped like a smile :)
  • Avocado has plenty of healthy fats that helps our brain.

You get the idea! Research those body benefits and share the info with your child. Not only does this help them understand why to eat this now it creates a strong foundation of healthy eating and builds the knowledge of the direct connection between food and our bodies.
